Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a recycling centre on Hallowfield Way in Mitcham.

Around 400 cubic metres of household waste inside a single-storey recycling centre was alight. There were no reports of any injuries.

Station Officer Anthony Spencer, who was at the scene, said: “Crews arrived to find flames and heavy smoke coming from the recycling centre, but quick action from crews meant that this was quickly suppressed.

“Crews worked steadily to damp down remaining hot spots throughout the early hours of the morning and used on-site diggers to pull out the household waste to ensure that the fire had not spread.”

The Brigade was called at 0343 and the fire was under control by 0618. Fire crews from Wimbledon, Mitcham and Sutton fire stations attended the scene.

The fire is believed to be accidental but the exact cause has been recorded as undetermined.
