Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a boat fire on the River Lea in Stratford, near Wick Lane.

One narrow boat weighing approximately five tonnes was destroyed by fire. A gas cylinder at the scene was cooled to an ambient temperature and removed, as some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat.

The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took over 10 calls to this fire. The Brigade was first called at 2207 and the fire was under control by 2323. Crews from Homerton, Bethnal Green, Stratford and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
