Access and Facilities:

For the LFB.

It is really important that when a new project for a building or piece of infrastructure is being developed that consideration is given to how firefighters can safely gain quick access in the event of a fire or incident.

This is to ensure that our firefighters can conduct search and rescue activities and tackle a fire quickly and in relative safety. The provision of firefighters lifts and other equipment such as rising (and falling) mains in very tall or very deep buildings being just some examples of critical systems which can make a significant difference in both time, and physiological impact, on our crews.

There is more detailed information contained within a number of sources that gives guidance on what access and facilities should be provided and these include;

  • Approved Document B,
  • BS9999,
  • BS9991 and
  • BS9990.

Each provide generic guidance for common buildings but design teams should consider the scheme they are developing. Where it is complex or unusual, seek early engagement with the fire service for further advice.

It is also important to recognise that not all UK Fire services have the same vehicles and equipment. Information about LFB’s vehicles and other useful guidance on the design of areas such as access roads is detailed within Guidance note 29, available below.
