Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to a fire in a balcony on Warrior Close in Thamesmead yesterday night.
The balcony of a flat on the fourth floor was badly damaged by the blaze. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus contained the fire to the balcony, and there was no heat or smoke damage inside the property.
The fire was noticed by a neighbour, who raised the alarm with the occupants of the flat below. Two women and three children left the property before the arrival of the Brigade. Thankfully there were no injuries.
There was a smoke alarm fitted in the property, but it didn’t operate because the smoke was kept outside in the balcony.
The Brigade was called at 2118 and the fire was under control by 2145. Fire crews from Plumstead and East Greenwich fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
