Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers were called to a fire at a car scrap yard on Wanstead Park Road in Ilford this morning.
Seven cars and three vans were destroyed by the blaze. A hazard zone was set up as some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat. Firefighters cooled the cylinders down and removed them to safety.
Station Manager Kevin Eager was at the scene:
“The A406 North Circular Road was temporarily closed but has now reopened. Motorists were advised to avoid the area. Crews will remain at the scene damping down remaining pockets of fire.”
The Brigade was called at 0545 and the fire was under control by 0847. Crews from Ilford, Stratford, East Ham and Barking fire stations were at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
