Firefighters have issued a warning about using portable stoves indoors after been called to a house fire in Eldon Road in Wood Green on Sunday afternoon(20 August).
The fire badly damaged the kitchen and caused smoke logging throughout the terraced property. Four people left the house before the Brigade arrived and one woman was treated for smoke inhalation and burns.
The fire was caused after cooking oil being heated on a camping stove in the kitchen caught fire.
Watch Manager Chris Haggar from Tottenham white watch said; “This fire is a stark reminder that you should never use portable camping equipment indoors. The consequences, as shown by this incident, can be disastrous. The fire caused serious damage to the property and injured the lady using the stove. She also tried to tackle the fire herself by smothering it with a blanket. This then set alight and caused the gas cylinder to explode. If you have a fire you should never try and tackle it yourself. Alert other people and get out of the property immediately, closing the door behind you. Then call ‘999.’”
The Brigade was called at 1443 and the fire was under control by 1508. Two fire engines and around 10 firefighters from Tottenham fire station attended the incident.
