Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters were called to reports of smoke issuing from part of the Science Museum on Exhibition Road in South Kensington SW7 this afternoon.
The alarm was caused by a burnt out lift motor which had been extinguished before the Brigade arrived. Around 4,000 people were also evacuated from the building before crews got to the incident.
The Brigade was called at 1604 and the incident was over at 1636. Crews from Hammersmith and Battersea fire stations attended the scene.
