A fan that fell over in a bedroom is believed to be the cause of a flat fire on Foxley Road in Purley last night.
A woman was woken up by the sound of the fire which was at the end of her bed. She collected her children and evacuated the property. The woman was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
Watch Manager Ian Day said:
“The woman did the right thing initially by getting herself and her children out. However, she went back into the flat and tried to fight the fire. It is really important that you never go back inside of a burning building and leave the fighting of fire to the professionals.”
Half of the second floor flat was damaged by fire. Two men from a ground floor flat left the building before the Brigade arrived.
The Brigade was called at 2134 and the fire was under control by 2208. Fire crews from Purley and Wallington fire stations attended the scene.
