A wheelchair user was rescued by firefighters from a terraced house flat fire on Fortune Place near Old Kent Road last night.
The fire destroyed part of the kitchen on the ground floor of the three floored house. The rest of the property was damaged by smoke and heat.
A smoke alarm alerted the residents to the blaze and three people evacuated the property before the Brigade arrived. Crews wearing breathing apparatus took the wheelchair user to safety. She was suffering from smoke inhalation and taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.
The Brigade was called at 1653 and the incident was over by 1708. Crews from Old Kent Road and Peckham attended the incident.
The cause of the fire is believed to be a tumble dryer and is under further investigation.
