Two fire engines and 10 firefighters and officers were called to a fire at a block of flats in Myrtle Walk in Hackney.
Part of a flat on the first floor of the building was damaged by fire.
One man was rescued from the flat by crews wearing breathing apparatus and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
The Brigade was called at 1956 and the fire was under control at 2037. Fire crews from Shoreditch and Whitechapel fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
