Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a block of flats on Stratford Road in
Plaistow.
A small part of a third floor flat was damaged by fire.
A man and a woman escaped from the affected flat and were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews and taken to hospital as a precaution. A further two adults and six children left neighbouring flats before the arrival of the Brigade.
The Brigade was called at 1146 and the fire was under control at 1303. Fire crews from Plaistow, Stratford, East Ham, and Polplar fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is believed to be a candle coming into contact with combustible items.
