Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to a fire at a bungalow in Fairholme Avenue, Gidea Park.
Part of the loft and roof of a semi-detached bungalow were damaged by the fire. One man and one woman left the property before the Brigade arrived. The man was treated for smoke inhalation and the woman for shock by London Ambulance Service crews and they were both taken to hospital.
The Brigade was called at 0340 and the fire was under control at 0507. Fire crews from Hornchurch, Harold Hill, Romford and Dagenham fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
