Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a house on Herbert Road in Ilford.
Part of the ground floor of the two storey terraced house was destroyed by fire. One man was rescued from the house by two members of the public before the Brigade arrived. The man was treated on the scene by London Ambulance Service before being taken to hospital where sadly he passed away.
The Brigade was called at 1648 and the fire was under control by 1818. Fire crews from Ilford, Stratford and East Ham fire stations were at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Met Police and the Brigade.
