Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a flat on Craymill Square in Crayford.
Part of a four roomed flat on the second floor was damaged by the fire. One woman was rescued by a member of the public. She was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews and taken to hospital, where she sadly later died.
The Brigade was called at 2113 and the fire was under control by 2259. Initial crews were on scene within six minutes. Fire crews from Erith and Plumstead fire stations and colleagues from Kent Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
