Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire on Scylla Road in Peckham.
The loft space of one house was destroyed by the fire and part of the first floor was damaged. A small part of the first floor and loft space of an adjoining property was also damaged. One man and one woman left before the Brigade arrived and both were assessed on scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews.
The Brigade was called at 1656 and the fire was under control by 1810. Fire crews from New Cross, Peckham, Old Kent Road, Greenwich and Brixton fire stations attended the incident.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
