Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a block of flats on Manchester Road on the Isle of Dogs.
The ground floor flat was completely destroyed by fire. Sadly, one man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Brigade’s 999 Control centre received 43 calls alerting them to the fire.
The Brigade was called at 1640 and the fire was under control by 1757. Fire crews from Millwall, Plaistow, Shadwell, East Greenwich, Whitechapel and Greenwich fire stations were at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
