Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a terraced house converted into flats on Upper Brockley Road in Brockley.
Half of a studio flat on the second floor of the building was damaged by fire. One person left the building before the Brigade arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This incident shows just how important it is to have working smoke alarms. Thankfully, smoke alarms fitted inside the property were able to give the earliest possible warning to the fire, providing time to escape.
“Don't just fit a smoke alarm in your hall and landing – also fit them in any room where a fire can start, for example, any room where you smoke or leave appliances plugged in and fit a heat alarm in your kitchen.”
The Brigade was called at 1537 and the fire was under control by 1635. Fire crews from New Cross, Lewisham, Deptford and Lee Green fire stations attended the scene.
The Brigade’s Fire Investigators believe the fire was accidental and involved a fridge freezer.
