Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a flat on Folly Wall in the Isle of Dogs.

Part of a two-roomed flat on the first floor of the building was damaged by fire. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued one man from the second of the building via an internal staircase. He was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews and taken to hospital.

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took 13 calls to the blaze.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “On arrival we were faced with a well developed fire and smoke was coming from the first floor window. There were a number of people outside the building and they informed crews that someone was still inside.

“Firefighters went into the building and rescued a man who was in a bedroom above the fire floor.

“Thankfully, smoke alarms fitted inside the property alerted a member of staff to the fire who then raised the alarm. You should have smoke alarms in any room where a fire can start in your home, for example any room where appliances are plugged in, and a heat alarm in your kitchen.”

The Brigade was called at 2221 and the fire was under control by 2253. Fire crews from Millwall, Plaistow, Shadwell and East Greenwich fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
