Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a maisonette on Baythorne Street in Mile End.
Part of a split-level maisonette on the second and third floor of the building was damaged by fire. Firefighters led one man to safety who was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews for smoke inhalation and one woman was treated on scene after suffering from shock.
Station Commander Clive Robinson, who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire to a bedroom inside a maisonette and prevent further damage to the property."
The Brigade's Fire Investigators believe the fire was accidental and involved an extension lead.
Overloaded sockets are one of the most common causes of electrical fires. Some electrical appliances use more power than others, so be mindful not to overload extension leads and always check that you’re using the right fuse for the plug.
The Brigade was called at 1317 and the fire was under control by 1408. Fire crews from Millwall, Shadwell, Stratford and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
