Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a flat on Westmoreland Drive, Sutton.
Most of a studio flat on the ground floor was damaged by fire. One man left the building before the Brigade arrived and firefighters led seven people from neighbouring flats to safety. There were no reports of any injuries.
The Brigade were called at 0645 and the fire was under control by 0723. Fire crews from Sutton, Wallington and Mitcham fire stations attended the incident.
The cause of the fire is believed to have started in a fridge freezer.
