Firefighters rescued three people from a house fire on Belsize Lane in West Hampstead.

The Brigade believes a passer-by saw smoke coming from the property. He ran into the house to help and became trapped on the staircase with the two residents.

Thankfully a neighbour heard the smoke alarm sounding and called 999. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus found two men and a woman inside the property and led them all to safety.

Part of the ground floor was damaged by the fire. Three people were suffering from smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service crews.

A Brigade spokesperson said: “If you see a fire or hear a smoke alarm sounding, call 999 as soon as possible and the Brigade will attend. Don’t put yourself at risk and try to enter the building as it could be putting yourself in danger. The sooner we are called the sooner we can respond and deal with the emergency.”

The Brigade was called at 2032 and the fire was under control by 2116. Fire crews from Woodford and Kentish Town fire stations attended the incident. The fire is believed to be caused by a fault in a microwave.
