Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire on the roof of a hotel on Fitzroy Street in Fitzrovia.

Half of the roof was damaged by the fire. There were no reports of any injuries.

The Brigade was called at 1940 and the fire was under control by 2130. Fire crews from Euston, Soho, Kentish Town and Paddington fire stations were at the scene.

The fire has been recorded as accidental and the cause is believed to be the unsafe use of a disposable barbecue.

The Brigade’s tips on preventing grass fires are as follows:

  • Don’t use disposable barbecues at all in public spaces during prolonged hot weather
  • Dispose of smoking materials such as cigarettes and matches safely
  • Never leave camp fires unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them
  • Clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire
  • Explain to children the dangers of playing with and lighting fires
