Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a waste management facility on Devon Street in South Bermondsey.

Around 10 tonnes of mixed refuse inside a single storey, self-contained unit on the ground floor of a refuse plant was alight. A further 200 tonnes of mixed refuse was removed to a safe area and dampened down. There were no reports of any injuries.

The Brigade was called at 0711 and the fire was under control by 1508. Fire crews from Old Kent Road, New Cross, Peckham and Dockhead fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental and caused by a build-up of heat which can occur when refuse is compacted together.
