Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a waste transfer station on Churchfields Road in Beckenham.
Around 20 tonnes of mixed household waste was alight inside a concrete transfer bay. There were no reports of any injuries.
Station Manager Gary Thompson who was at the scene said: "Firefighters worked hard throughout the day to bring a fire at a waste transfer station under control.
"This created smoke in the local area, so we urged residents to keep their windows and doors shut.
"There was also some disruption to roads, so we kindly asked locals to avoid the area."
The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 19 calls to the blaze.
The Brigade was called at 1153 and the fire was under control by 1640. Fire crews from Beckenham, Bromley and Forest Hill fire stations were at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
