Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters dealt with a fire in a maisonette on Bath Street in Islington.

A split level maisonette on the sixth and seventh floors of the building was destroyed by fire. Part of a four roomed flat on the eighth floor was also damaged by the blaze. Around 80 people left the building before the Brigade arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.

Station Commander Mark Jordan, who was at the scene, said: “The fire affected a split level maisonette.

"Around 80 people evacuated the block before firefighters arrived.”

The Brigade's Fire Investigators believe the fire was caused by sunlight which refracted off a mirror and ignited curtains in the bedroom.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:

“These sorts of fires are not as rare as you would think, fires caused by refracted sunlight can happen all year round and are actually quite common.

"Our advice is to make sure that you keep mirrors, crystals, glass ornaments and other reflective items out of direct sunlight at all times.”

The Brigade’s top three sunlight safety tips are:

  • Keep mirrors and crystal or glass objects away from sunny windowsills and flammable materials
  • Fit at least one smoke alarm per floor and test them every week to make sure they work and the batteries are not flat
  • If you have a fire, close the door on the blaze, get out, stay out and call the Brigade immediately

The Brigade was called at 1853 and the fire was under control by 2024. Fire crews from Shoreditch, Whitechapel, Islington, Dowgate, Bethnal Green and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.
