Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters attended a fire in a private residential garage attached to a house on Brookmead Avenue in Bromley.

A small area of the semi-detached house over two floors was damaged by the fire in the adjoining garage. The garage was destroyed by the fire.

A man left the house before the Brigade arrived. He was treated at the scene by London Ambulance crews for the effects of smoke inhalation.

The Brigade's fire investigators believe the fire was caused by a fault within a fridge freezer.

The Brigade was called at 0753 and the fire was under control by 1022. Fire crews from Bromley and Sidcup fire stations attended the scene.

Fire safety tips for white goods:

  • If you are concerned about the safety of a product stop using it and make your concern known to the retailer, manufacturer or your local Trading Standards office.
  • Clean your tumble dryer filter after every load.
  • Don't overload sockets with lots of energy-hungry appliances – follow the one plug per socket rule.
  • A list of recalled products is available on the uk Product Recall page.
  • Take extra care with second-hand appliances, ensure they have been safety checked and are not listed on the product recall register.
  • Always make sure new appliances are registered so that manufacturers can contact you in the event of any problems – it takes minutes to org.uk
  • Avoid using dishwashers, washing machines, and tumble dryers when you’re asleep or away from home.
  • When you’re asleep, if a fire starts you will have less time to react and get out to safety. Make sure that you know the plan.
