Firefighters are warning people to take care not to overload sockets after a fire at a house on Park Avenue in Mitcham.
Part of the first floor and the loft conversion of a terraced house was damaged by fire. There were no reports of any injuries.
The Brigade’s Fire Investigators believe the fire was caused by an overloaded plug socket supplying power for building work.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “On arrival, crews saw smoke coming from the house, which was having building work carried out in the loft, and discovered the fire in a rear bedroom. The residents and construction workers left the building before the Brigade arrived.
“Overloaded sockets are one of the most common causes of electrical fires. Some electrical appliances use more power than others, so be mindful not to overload extension leads and always check that you’re using the right fuse for the plug.
“Power-hungry appliances such as kettles, toasters and microwaves, shouldn’t be on the same extension. It’s also important to fully unwind drum extension leads. If you leave them coiled, they can overheat and cause a fire.”
The Brigade was called at 1002 and the fire was under control by 1108. Two fire engines and around 10 firefighters from Mitcham and Tooting fire stations attended the scene.
