Firefighters rescued a not-so-crafty fox who found themselves trapped on an upturned boat in the River Thames in Southwark.

The fox was trapped on the mud bank with the rising tide coming in and was brought to safety.

Station Commander James Chapman, who was at the scene, said: “The fox was down in the wharf when the tide went out. When it came back in, the fox tried to make it back to the riverside, but found itself stuck and unable to find a way out.

“Luckily, there was an upturned boat down on the mud bank and the fox managed to sit on top of it to stay out of the water until help arrived.

“Firefighters worked exceptionally hard with our partners at the RSPCA to pull the boat into position so that the little fox could be rescued.

“The fox was shaken up, but thankfully unhurt and was taken to be checked over.

“We would always encourage people to call the RSPCA in the first instance if they see an animal stuck or in distress.

“Firefighters love animals too and we are always happy to assist if our specialist equipment is required, as in this case.”

The Brigade was called at 1054 and the incident was over for firefighters by 1300. Fire crews from Whitechapel and Dockhead fire stations attended the scene.
