Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a house on Brewery Road in Plumstead.
Over half of the first floor was damaged by the fire in the two-story house. The fire involved a first floor bedroom and spread to the landing area of the staircase.
The fire was discovered by a resident of the property who smelt burning, saw smoke, raised the alarm and evacuated everyone out the premises. Two women and a baby left the house before the Brigade arrived. They were treated on scene by London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation. The baby was taken to hospital and discharged the same day.
The Brigade's Fire Investigators believe the fire was caused by clothing being left too close to a halogen heater.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Luckily, the residents discovered the fire and got out of the premises safely before the Brigade arrived.
“If you use a portable heater this winter, never leave it unattended. It’s really important to ensure they are placed well away from clothes, duvets and other items that can catch fire if they get too close.
“We always advise people to check their smoke alarms in their homes. Don't just fit a smoke alarm in your hall and landing – also fit them in any room where a fire can start. For example, any room where you smoke or leave appliances plugged in.”
The Brigade was called at 1124 and the fire was under control at 1224. Fire crews from Plumstead and East Greenwich fire stations attended the scene.
