Firefighters rescued a stray cat which got stuck in the basement of a house on Crescent Wood Road in Dulwich.
Crews were called to the terraced house, which was under renovation, after the moggy got wedged inside some metal ducting.
It’s thought he had gone inside to find some shelter and became stuck. Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to locate him and were able to pull the metal of the ducting aside to release him.
Leading Firefighter David Williams, who was at the scene, said: “On the ground floor of the property there were some floor-level ducting vents which went all the way down to the basement.
“We used the thermal imaging camera to narrow down where he was and once we got down to the basement we could pull the metal aside and get him out.
“The people in the building didn’t know whose cat he was – he may have been a stray as he wasn’t injured but looked in need of a good meal and we think he probably went in there to find somewhere warm.
“We named him Tiddles and left him in the care of the people at the building who were going to call the RSPCA or a vet to get him checked over.
“We would always encourage people to call the RSPCA in the first instance if they see an animal stuck or in distress.
“Firefighters love animals too and we are always happy to assist if our specialist equipment is required.”
The Brigade was called at 1451 and the incident was over for firefighters by 1508. One fire engine from Forest Hill Fire Station attended.
