Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a flat on Wadbrook Street in Kingston.
The kitchen in the five-roomed flat on the fifth floor of an eight-storey block was damaged by the fire and there was smoke damage throughout. There were no reports of any injuries.
The occupier of the property left the building and called 999 when they noticed smoke coming from the back of the dishwasher.
The Brigade's Fire Investigators believe the fire was accidental and caused by a fault in a dishwasher.
Station Commander Ben Midgley, who was at the scene, said: “Nearly one fire a day in London involves white goods such as washing machines, fridges or dishwashers, and our advice is to always make sure you’re aware of white goods safety and to check your appliances.
“If your white goods start making a strange noise, don’t ignore it. If you think there’s a problem always unplug it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair technician.
“Most fires where white goods are the source of ignition are not down to anything you have done – so always make sure you register your appliances as you’ll be informed if any issues are identified with the product you’ve bought.
“You can also check if your appliance has been recalled by checking the Government’s database here.
"You should also always keep your white goods in a safe place out of the way as if a fire does break out you will need clear escape routes.”
The Brigade was called at 1008 and the fire was under control by 1105. Fire crews from Kingston, New Malden and Twickenham fire stations were at the scene.
