Firefighters are sharing their advice for using candles safely after a flat fire on Bridgman Road in Chiswick.

Part of a flat on the ground floor of a converted end-of-terrace house was damaged by fire. Firefighters assisted one man and one woman from the flat who were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

The Brigade’s Fire Investigators believe the fire was caused by an unattended candle.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Candles are one of the most common causes of fire.

"It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from curtains and anything else that can easily catch fire. They should always be kept in a sturdy, fire-resistant candleholder too.

“This incident is also a timely reminder of just how important it is to have working smoke alarms inside your home. The fire was discovered when the residents, who were asleep at the time of the fire, were awoken by smoke alarms sounding.

"You should fit smoke alarms in all rooms where a fire might start, plus a heat alarm in your kitchen and bathroom.”

The Brigade was called at 0539 and the fire was under control by 0713. Two fire engines and around 10 firefighters from Chiswick and Acton fire stations attended the scene.

Top candle safety tips

  • Keep candles/tea lights away from curtains, furniture and anything else that can catch fire.
  • Keep loose clothing and hair away from candles/tea lights when they are lit.
  • Always place your candles/tea lights in a suitable fire resistant candleholder.
  • Make sure the candleholder holds the candle/tea light firmly and is on a flat and stable surface to stop it falling over.
  • Make sure you put out any candles, incense and oil burners when you leave the room and especially before bed.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • You could swap your traditional wax candles for LED flameless ones. They are safer as you can leave them unattended, you don't have to worry about knocking them over and if you doze off while it's on, it's not a problem.
