A woman has been rescued by firefighters from a flat fire on Camberwell Station Road in Southwark.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman using a fire escape hood from a split-level maisonette on the lower-ground and ground floor of a four-storey house. The woman suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene by firefighters and London Ambulance Service crews before being taken to hospital.
Part of the lower-ground floor was damaged by the fire.
Fire escape hoods provide members of the public with up to 15 minutes protection from four of the main fire gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein) and can be worn by conscious or unconscious people. If more than 15 minutes protection is required then another hood can be given to each wearer. They do not provide oxygen but temporarily filter toxic smoke to make breathing easier.
The Brigade was called at 1411 and the fire was under control by 1512. Fire crews from Peckham, Lambeth and Brixton fire stations attended the scene.
The fire is believed to have been accidental, although the exact cause has been recorded as undetermined.
