Firefighters rescued a woman from a house fire on Nutbrook Street in Peckham.

Part of the first floor of an end-of-terrace house was damaged by fire. One man and a woman were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

Station Commander Mark Edwards, who was at the scene, said: “Crews worked quickly to gain access and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman who was in a bedroom on the first floor of the building. Another man was also led to safety from inside the property.

"There were a lot of possessions and clutter inside the flat which made it challenging for firefighters.

"Hoarding means exit routes can become blocked, making safe evacuation more difficult.

"Fires can also spread much faster, especially when there are flammable items such as newspapers or cardboard."

The Brigade was called at 0411 and the fire was under control by 0510. Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters from Peckham, New Cross and Old Kent Road fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
