Firefighters rescued two women who were stuck in the mud near River Gardens Walk in Greenwich.
The Brigade’s Lambeth River fire boat crews used mud paths to rescue the women who were stranded up to their knees in mud. There were no reports of any injuries.
Sub Officer Paul Gouk, who was at the scene, said: “We were called to reports of two women who were stranded in mud around 30 metres from the water’s edge.
“Using three, 5-metre inflatable mud paths, crews worked quickly to reach the women and brought them safely on board the fire boat.
“They were given blankets and taken to Greenwich Pier where they were then taken home.
“This was a great example of partnership working between the fire boats, land crews and our blue light partners.
“As it's the National Fire Chiefs Council’s Be Water Aware week, this incident is a timely reminder to take care near the water’s edge. It’s easy to fall or get sucked into mud that doesn’t look deep until you start to wade into it.”
The Brigade was called at 1154 and the incident was over for firefighters by 1238. Fire crews from East Greenwich, Greenwich, Millwall, Plaistow and Lambeth River fire stations attended the scene.
