Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a house fire on Benson Quay in Wapping.

The ground floor of an end-of-terrace house was destroyed by fire and part of the first floor, external fascia and the guttering were also damaged by the blaze. A small part of the first-floor balcony of a neighbouring property and a vehicle were damaged by fire. There were no reports of any injuries.

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took 19 calls to the blaze.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This incident also shows just how important it is to have working smoke alarms in your home. There were smoke alarms fitted inside the property which raised the alarm.

“Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning when a fire starts, providing time to escape. We encourage everyone to have smoke alarms fitted in every room where a fire could start, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen. It's important to test them regularly.

The Brigade was called at 1731 and the fire was under control by 1852. Fire crews from Shadwell, Whitechapel, Dockhead and Dowgate fire stations attended the scene.

The Brigade’s Fire Investigators believe the fire was accidental and caused by an electrical fault.
