Firefighters rescued three people from a flat fire on Powis Square in Notting Hill.
Part of a four-roomed flat on the first floor of a converted end-of-terrace house was damaged by fire. Three people were treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.
Station Commander Paul Morgan, who was at the scene, said: “On arrival firefighters could see a small fire in a first floor window.
“Crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man and woman from a first-floor flat via an internal staircase and another man was rescued from a second floor flat using a fire escape hood.”
Fire escape hoods provide members of the public with up to 15 minutes protection from four of the main fire gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein) and can be worn by conscious or unconscious people.
If more than 15 minutes protection is required then another hood can be given to each wearer. They do not provide oxygen but temporarily filter toxic smoke to make breathing easier.
The Brigade was called at 2049 and the fire was under control by 2200. Fire crews from North Kensington, Kensington, Paddington and Hammersmith fire stations attended the scene.
The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by a towel coming into contact with an oven.
