Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a hotel on Romford Road in Forest Gate.

A small part of a ground floor communal room was damaged by fire.

The smoke alarm sounded and guests evacuated the hotel before the Brigade arrived. Firefighters searched the building to check there no guests were remaining in their rooms and found some had failed to vacate as specified in the advice for the building despite the fire alarm actuating. The remaining guests evacuated the property safely assisted by fire crews.

Sub Officer Ian Robinson was at the scene, he said: “Whenever you are staying away from home be sure to familiarise yourself with the fire safety advice for the building you are staying at, in case there is an emergency.

“This incident happened in the middle of the night when most people are asleep. A smoke alarm sounding gives the earliest warning that there is a fire. Fortunately there were no injuries but this incident is a timely reminder to never ignore fire alarms or smoke alarms. It may be tempting to brush off alarms sounding as a false alarm, but it’s important that you treat every alarm as though it was a genuine incident.”

The Brigade was called at 0235 and the incident was over by 0341. Crews from Stratford, Leytonstone, Plaistow and East Ham fire stations were in attendance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Met police.
