Firefighters are reminding residents to park safely and not too close to junctions after attending a flat fire on Cortis Road in Putney yesterday evening.
Part of the kitchen in a flat on the fifth floor of a six-storey block was damaged by the blaze.
One woman and a child left the building before the arrival of the Brigade. The child was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews.
Station Commander Jonathan Holt, who was at the scene, said: “When crews arrived they had difficulty parking the fire engine as a number of cars were parked too close to the junction.
“Firefighters worked hard to bring the blaze under control and prevented it from spreading to the rest of the flat.
“We know that parking on streets can sometimes be a bit tight, but we still need to be able to respond quickly and safely to incidents. Please help us get through by parking carefully and considerately.”
The Brigade’s fire investigators believe the fire was caused by combustible items too close to an oven.
The Brigade was called at 1800 and the fire was under control by 1902. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Wandsworth, Richmond, Chelsea and Tooting fire stations attended the scene.
