Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a flat on Cheneys Road in Leytonstone.
Part of a flat on the first floor of a terraced house converted into flats was damaged by the fire. Firefighters sadly found one man in the flat who was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man left the building before the Brigade arrived and was taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews.
The Brigade was called at 0024 and the fire was under control by 0203. Fire crews from Leytonstone, Leyton, Stratford and Homerton fire stations were at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
