Firefighters have issued a candle safety warning after a maisonette fire on Weymouth Terrace in Hackney.

Half of the first floor of a six-roomed, split-level maisonette was damaged by fire. One man was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

The Brigade’s Fire Investigators believe the fire was accidental and caused by a candle igniting nearby clothing.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “The resident awoke to see smoke and flames in their bedroom. They attempted to tackle the fire themselves before leaving the property.

“Candles are one of the most common causes of fire. It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from curtains, clothes and anything else that can easily catch fire. They should always be kept in a sturdy, fire-resistant candleholder too.

“This is also a reminder to never try to tackle a fire yourself. Leave it to the professionals and call 999 as soon as you become aware of a fire in your home.”

The Brigade was called at 2039 and the fire was under control by 2106. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Shoreditch, Homerton, Bethnal Green and Whitechapel fire stations attended the scene.

Firefighters' top candle safety tips

  • Keep candles away from curtains, furniture, and anything else that can catch fire.
  • Always place your candles in a suitable fire-resistant candleholder.
  • Make sure the candleholder holds the candle firmly and is on a flat and stable surface to stop it falling over.
  • Make sure you put out any candles, incense and oil burners when you leave the room and especially before bed.
  • You could swap your traditional wax candles for LED flameless ones. They are safer as you can leave them unattended, you don't have to worry about knocking them over and if you doze off while it's on, it's not a problem.
