Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a block of maisonettes on Russett Way in Lewisham.
Part of the top floor of a split-level maisonette was damaged by the fire. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman and two children from the top floor of the property. They were all taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews, where sadly one of the children passed away. The other child and the woman also sadly later passed away in hospital.
London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who died in the fire on Russett Way in Lewisham on Saturday, and with the whole community. I am deeply saddened to hear that two children and a woman have died.
"Everyone at the London Fire Brigade, including our officers in the area, would like to offer whatever support we can to the local community as it comes to terms with this devastating event.
“Fatal fires involving children are incredibly distressing and I would like to praise the firefighters who tackled the intense blaze and who, alongside paramedics, worked hard to try and save the lives of the family.”
The Brigade was called at 0544 and the fire was under control by 0649. Fire crews from Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford, New Cross, Lee Green and East Greenwich were at the scene.
