Firefighters are sharing their fire safety advice for smokers after a flat fire on Lockwood Square in Bermondsey.
A small part of a living room in a three room flat on the top floor of a block of flats was destroyed by fire. One man was rescued by crews wearing breathing apparatus and treated on scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service before being taken to hospital.
The fire is believed to have been caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.
Sub Officer Ian Epps said: “We’d rather you didn’t smoke at all, but if you are a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.
“If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy your home, but also cost you your life.
"There were a lot of possessions and clutter in the property which can make it challenging for firefighters to gain access. Hoarding means exit routes can become blocked, making safe evacuation more difficult.
"Fires can also spread much faster, especially when there are flammable items such as newspapers or cardboard."
Safety advice for smokers:
The Brigade was called at 2208 and the fire was under control by 2301. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Dockhead, Old Kent Road, Deptford, and Dowgate fire stations attended the scene.
