Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a fire at a mid-terraced house over two floors on Sutherland Road in Croydon.
The ground floor of the house was destroyed by fire and half of the first floor was also destroyed by fire.
One woman was rescued by fire crews from the blaze, but sadly died at the scene.
The Brigade was called at 1043 and the fire was under control by 1233. Fire crews from Norbury, West Norwood, Mitcham and Woodside fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Service and the Brigade’s fire investigators.
