Firefighters are sharing their tips for using batteries safely after an electric scooter fire on Knightland Road in Hackney.

Crews arrived to find a lithium-ion battery in an electric scooter alight outside a block of flats. There were no reports of any injuries.

The fire is believed to have been caused by the failure of a lithium-ion battery.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Batteries can present a fire risk if they’re over-charged, short circuited, submerged in water or damaged, so it’s really important to protect them against being damaged and to charge them safely.”

Firefighters' top three tips for using lithium-ion batteries safely

  1. Avoid storing, using or charging batteries at very high or low temperatures.
  2. Protect batteries against being damaged – that's crushed, punctured or immersed in water.
  3. Do not over charge your product - once your item is fully charged, disconnect it and turn the charger off.

The Brigade was called at 1712 and the fire was under control by 1739. One fire engine from Stoke Newington fire station attended the scene.
