Firefighters are sharing their advice on using incense safely after a house fire on Aldine Street in Shepherd’s Bush.

A bedroom on the lower ground floor of an end-of-terrace house was damaged by fire. There were no reports of any injuries.

The Brigade’s Fire Investigators believe the fire was caused by an incense stick which was left alight and placed too close to combustible materials.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This incident shows just how important it is to have working smoke alarms. The residents were alerted to the fire by smoke alarms sounding, giving them time to escape. They promptly left the property and called 999.

“You should have working smoke alarms in every room where a fire can start, for example any room where appliances are plugged in, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen.

“Incense sticks, candles and oil burners are one of the most common causes of fire within homes. It’s really important that you never leave these items unattended.

"Make sure you place incense sticks in a suitable, fire-resistant holder and keep them away from curtains and anything else that can easily catch fire. Remember to put them out entirely when you leave the room and especially before bed.”

The Brigade was called at 1601 and the fire was under control by 1701. Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters from Hammersmith, North Kensington and Acton fire stations attended the scene.

Firefighters' top 3 tips for using candles and incense sticks safely

  1. Make sure you put out any candles, incense and oil burners when you leave the room and especially before bed.
  2. Place candles, incense and oil burners in heat-resistant holders and place them on a stable surface where they won't be knocked over.
  3. Keep them away from materials that might catch fire - things like curtains, furniture, clothes and hair.
