Three fire engines and around 20 firefighters were called to a maisonette fire on St Pauls Close in Carshalton.
A man was brought out of the property from a ground floor bedroom by fire crews wearing breathing apparatus. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews.
Part of the split-level maisonette was damaged by fire.
The Brigade was called at 0010 and the fire was under control by 0052. Firefighters from Mitcham, Sutton and Wallington fire stations attended the incident.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade’s Fire Investigation Unit and by the Metropolitan Police Service.
