Firefighters are warning not to overload plug sockets after a restaurant fire on Lansdowne Row in Mayfair.
A small part of the flat roof of a mid-terraced restaurant was damaged by fire. There were no reports of any injuries.
The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by overloaded plug sockets.
Station Officer Tim Martin, who was at the scene, said: “On arrival crews were faced with heavy smoke which had spread to the flat roof of the building and to a neighbouring restaurant. Several staff members were already out of the building on arrival.
“Crews quickly entered the restaurant and found a small fire in the bar area surrounding the plug sockets. Firefighters worked swiftly to bring the fire under control and used specialist cutting equipment to check for fire spread in the roof void of the building.
“Overloaded sockets are one of the most common causes of electrical fires. Some electrical appliances use more power than others, so be mindful not to overload extension leads and always check that you’re using the right fuse for the plug.
“Power-hungry appliances such as kettles, toasters and microwaves, shouldn’t be on the same extension. It’s also important to fully unwind drum extension leads. If you leave them coiled, they can overheat and cause a fire.”
The Brigade was called at 1825 and the fire was under control by 1939. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Soho, Euston and Lambeth fire stations attended the scene.
