Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a house fire on Albury Close in Hampton.

Part of the ground floor of a detached house was damaged by fire. One woman left the building before the Brigade arrived and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by items placed too close to an electric heater.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Fires involving heaters like this are all too common. They usually start when items, like clothes or bedding, are placed too close to the heater and ignite.

“It’s absolutely vital that heaters are kept well away from curtains, bedding or furniture and are never used to dry clothes.

“It's also important to always sit at least a metre away from the heater, as it could set fire to your clothes or your chair, and position them where they won’t be knocked over."

The Brigade was called at 2153 and the fire was under control by 2256. Fire crews from Twickenham, Heston and Richmond fire stations attended the scene.

Firefighters’ tips for using portable heaters safely

  • Make sure heaters are well maintained and in good working order.
  • Check that your heater isn't on a recall list.
  • Never install, repair or service appliances yourself. Make sure anyone who does is a registered professional.
  • Don't take risks with old heaters – if it's sparking, wires are loose or if it’s showing signs of damage, replace it with a new one or get it tested and repaired by a qualified electrician.
  • Before attempting to move your heater, turn it off and allow it to cool first
