Firefighters are sharing their advice on Student Fire Safety week after a fire at a student accommodation block on Tinworth Street in Vauxhall.

Part of a communal kitchen on the fifth floor of the building was damaged by fire. Heavy smoke logging affected the building and firefighters ventilated the property. Around 120 people left the building before the Brigade arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “With many students settling into their University accommodation, it’s important to know how to reduce the risks of a fire and stay safe in halls of residence or student houses. Take a look at our advice.

“As you settle in to a new term, make it a part of your new routine to carry out simple checks as you go about your day. This may mean double-checking that your escape route is clear before you go to bed, checking if the fire door at the end of the corridor is closed properly as you head out or making sure that your laptop is charging on a flat, hard surface. It may seem small, but it could save your life.”

The Brigade was called at 1619 and the fire was under control by 1658. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Lambeth, Soho, Dowgate and Brixton fire stations attended the scene.

The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault in an extractor hood.
